HISTORY 

Nell Gwyn, King Charles II of England's favorite mistress, defied her humble slum background with her innate wit and humor, setting her apart from her time. She once famously addressed their son, Charles, with the words, "Come here, you little bastard, and say hello to your father." In response to the King's protest, she cleverly retorted, "Your Majesty has given me no other name by which to call him." This quick-witted exchange led the King to grant their son a peerage, bestowing upon him the title of "the Earl of Burford."
