Ursa Major, the Great Bear, is said to represent Callisto, a stunning nymph who had vowed her chastity to the goddess Artemis but couldn't resist Zeus's advances, resulting in the birth of Arcas. When Hera, Zeus's wife, discovered this betrayal, she transformed Callisto into a bear. In a wilderness encounter, Arcas, unaware of his mother's fate, raised his spear in fear. Zeus stepped in, swept them up to the heavens. Callisto became Ursa Major, and Arcas found his place as Ursa Minor.
